It is with great sadness that we report the passing of our beautiful mother, Stella Belle James, on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at 96 years young. She was one of 11 children born to Frank and Flora (Schoolcraft) Sampson. Stella was a graduate of Hannibal High School. In 1948, she married the love of her life, Jesse, and together they raised four children. Stella was a former member of the Hannibal Historical Society, Hannibal Elderberries, Friends of the Library, Senior Council, and Hannibal’s Woman of the Year in 2012. She was known for dressing up in all kinds of costumes for the holidays and visiting the IGA-to surprise her daughter-in-law who worked there. Stella would also visit area nursing homes to spread some joy. She was an avid reader who loved animals, especially cats and birds. She was predeceased by her husband, Jesse; daughter-in-law, Diane and grandson, Robert.
Surviving are her four children, Jesse Jr., Patricia (John) Garbutt, Bonnie (Chris) Gould, and Frank (Wanda) James; three grandchildren, Crystal (Daniel) Ramirez, Jason (Jessica) Garbutt, and Amberann James; four great-grandchildren, Ella, Ashley, Bailie, and Diego; and two great great-grandchildren, Octavia and Damon.
In respect to her wishes, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hannibal Library or the Alzheimer's Association. Foster Funeral Home has care of arrangements.
Any time you put on a costume or make an apple pie, think of Mom. She will be smiling down and saying, “It needs more cinnamon!!”
