Phoenix, NY – Our beloved Mary L. Smith, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on October 8, 1943, in Malone, New York, Mary was the heart of our family and a vibrant presence in the community.
Having spent her latter years in Phoenix, NY, Mary worked with dedication as a Lab Technician at Owens-Illinois Glass in Volney, NY. Her meticulous talents and steadfast work ethic were admired by colleagues and friends alike.
Mary is survived by her devoted husband of 65 years, Ronald Lee Smith, with whom she built a wonderful life filled with cherished memories. Her legacy continues through her loving daughters, Patti (Brad) Owens, Lori (Richard) Metot, and Carol Williams. She was a proud grandmother to Nichole (Rob) Brodsky, Joel Owens, Ashley Owens, Brian (Brandy) Metot, Jonathan Metot, Brittaney Williams, Heather (Patrick) Matthews, Meghan (Richard) Williams, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. Her siblings, Gary (Cindy) Lyon and Holly Beth (Robert) Hastings, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends, will remember her with the fondest love.
Preceded in death by her parents, Luman Hollis and Lois B. Lyon, Mary held their memory close throughout her life.
Mary’s passions extended beyond her career. An accomplished cook, she shared her love of food with all who sat at her table. The joy she found in reading and camping was only surpassed by the delight she took in family gatherings. Mary’s community involvement included being an active member of the Lock Stock and Barrel Gun Club and the Red Hats Club, where her lively spirit and camaraderie were valued by all.
Family and friends are invited to honor Mary’s life at Foster Funeral Home, 910 Fay Street, Fulton, NY. Calling hours will be held on Friday, November 21, 2025, from 12 PM to 3 PM, followed by a funeral service at 3 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to St. Jude's Research Hospital, continuing Mary’s legacy of care and compassion.
Mary’s warmth, dedication, and unyielding love left an indelible mark on all who knew her. She will be dearly missed, but her spirit lives on in the hearts of those she touched. To leave a special message for the family, please sign the guestbook.
