Hannibal

Judith “Judy” K. Tyler, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 1st, 2026, at the age of 86. Born on Tuesday, December 5th, 1939, in Syracuse, New York, Judith was a cherished resident of Hannibal, NY, where she spent most of her life dedicated to her family, community, and career.

Judy was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 58 years, Richard Tyler; her parents, Lynn B. Johnson and Ruth L. Johnson; her infant son, Jonathan Tyler; and her sister, Carol Johnson.

She is survived by her loving daughters, Jill (Craig) Gilbert of Oswego, NY, and Susan (Charlie) Messer of Liverpool, NY. Judy was a proud grandmother to Jonathan Gilbert, Jessica (Matthew) Burzynski, Samuel (Destiny) Gilbert, Ethan Messer, and Jillian (Nicholas Fagan) Messer. Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren, Scarlett Burzynski, Jameson Burzynski, Gabriel Burzynski, and Theodore Gilbert. Judy is also survived by her sister, Lynne "Bunny" Phillips, and several nieces and nephews.

Judy dedicated her professional life to shaping young minds as an elementary school teacher. She began her teaching career in Holland Patent, where she met her husband, before settling in Hannibal. She spent the majority of her career at Fairley Elementary School, where she was a respected and beloved educator. Judy also served as vice president of the Hannibal Faculty Association, demonstrating her commitment to her colleagues and the education community.

A woman of deep faith, Judy was a long-time member of the Hannibal Global Methodist Church, where she served on the Administrative Council in various roles over the years. She was actively involved in the Sarah Circle and was a member of the Order of The Eastern Star. Judy's faith and community service were cornerstones of her life.

In her retirement, Judy enjoyed traveling with her husband and spending winters in Florida. However, her greatest joy came from spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought immense happiness to her life.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Judy's name to the Hannibal Global Methodist Church, 320 Church Street, Hannibal, NY 13074.
