The family of John R. Hilts is deeply saddened to announce his passing on May 22, 2026. Born in Lowville, NY on March 11, 1937, John lived a life filled with laughter, generosity and love for his family and the outdoors. He worked as a machine operator and troubleshooter at Container Corporation for 35 years.
John loved working on anything mechanical…if it was broken, he could fix it. He was always up for anything, if you thought you could beat him at basketball, he could prove you wrong. If you planned a day trip on motorcycles he’d come with you. His ability to draw and paint was remarkable; he painted murals on the walls in the family homes. He played the guitar and could sing like no other…he loved making people happy, his talents were endless. His love for animals was undeniable, if he found a stray, it became his…whether it was a cat, dog or raccoon.
He will be remembered by his loving wife of 67 years Betty, his sons Francis, Ricky (Rachel) Hilts, daughters Terry (Rob) Lamb and Bonnie (Rod) Sherman. Brother Bill (Sally) Hilts, sisters Dorthea Standen and Pauline Piper. 16 Grandchildren, 25 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great-Great Grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents Arthur and Madeline Hilts and daughter Tammy Lynn Hilts.
Calling hours are being held on Monday, June 1st from 11am – 1pm at Foster Funeral Home, 837 Cayuga Street, Hannibal, NY with a service to follow at 1pm. A graveside service will be at Fairdale Rural Cemetery, Hannibal. A Celebration of Life will be commencing at the American Legion in Hannibal directly after the burial.
