Frederick I. Sumner, 92, of Fulton, New York, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2025, at Menorah Park Nursing Home. A devoted family man, respected attorney, and proud veteran, Fred led a life marked by service, integrity, and a deep love for his community. Born on August 17, 1932, in Trenton, New Jersey, Fred graduated from Fulton High School in 1949 and earned a degree in History from Hartwick College in 1953. Following his graduation, he served honorably in the United States Marine Corps from 1953 to 1955. Upon completing his military service, Fred pursued his passion for law, earning his law degree from Syracuse University College of Law. Fred practiced law in Fulton for over six decades, most notably as a partner in the firm of Sumner and Auser Attorneys at Law. His dedication to public service included roles as City Attorney—twice—and as Fulton City Court Judge for six years. Throughout his career, he was known for his fairness, sharp mind, and commitment to justice. Fred was predeceased by his beloved wife of 42 years, Joyce E. Sumner.
He is survived by his son, Gregory M. Sumner (Nancy), and daughter, Elizabeth A. Nevin (Kevin Kribs); grandchildren Mary Bieganowski (Joel), Katherine Schumaker (Ethan), Leland Sumner, Aodhan Nevin, and Ciaran Nevin; and great-grandchildren Anya Elizabeth Schumaker and Logan John Schumaker, expected in September.
Beyond his professional achievements, Fred cherished time spent with family, whether traveling, reading, rooting for his favorite sports teams, or enjoying a round of golf. He will be remembered for his wisdom, warmth, and unwavering dedication to those he loved.
Calling hours will be from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21 at Foster Funeral Home, 910 Fay Street, Fulton with a service to follow at 1 p.m. Burial will be at Fairdale Rural Cemetery, Hannibal.
