Obituary of Frederic D. Van Patten Frederic D. Van Patten, 74, of Hannibal died on Wednesday, November 11, 2020 at Upstate Medical Hospital's burn unit after an accident at his home. Fred owned and operated FVP Transport trucking company prior to his retirement. He proudly served in the Army Reserves unit in Oswego for over 20 years. In 1984 he invented, and later patented, the Chimney Eye safety device for wood burning stoves. Prior to that he was a member of local laborers union. Fred was also an active member of the Mexico Volunteer Fire department in the 1970's. Fred was predeceased by his parents, A. Earle and Marian (Palmer) Van Patten; sister, Elizabeth “Bette” Steward and brother, Albert E. Van Patten, Jr. Surviving are a daughter, Rebecca (Van Patten) Caruana of Winter Garden, FL; a son, Scott (Sandy) Van Patten of Oklahoma City, OK and one granddaughter, Rachel Caruana of Baltimore, MD. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Jill (Howell) Van Patten of Zephyrhills, FL. In respect of Fred's wishes, there will be no calling hours or services.
