Hannibal

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Edward John Lewis on October 13, 2026, at his cherished home. Born in Oswego, NY, on September 29, 1940, Ed lived a life filled with love, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to his family and community.

Ed was the beloved son of the late James and Nettie Lewis. His early years were shaped by the loving guidance of his parents and the close-knit bonds of his family. He was predeceased by his brother James Lewis, his granddaughter Angel Rose, and his devoted wife, Bonnie Axtell Lewis, with whom he shared an unbreakable bond that began on their wedding day, September 5, 1969. Together, they carved out a beautiful life in Hannibal, NY, where their home became a haven for family gatherings and lifelong memories.

A proud veteran, Ed served his country with honor in the United States Army. After his military service, he embarked on a fulfilling career at Alcan of Oswego, dedicating over 30 years to the company. His work ethic and integrity were admired by colleagues and friends alike, and he took great pride in his contributions to the industry. Ed further demonstrated his commitment to his community by successfully campaigning for and being elected to the position of judge in Hannibal in 2009, serving in this judicial capacity from 2010 to 2014.

Ed’s legacy is carried forward by his loving family. He is survived by his cherished children, Danny (Megan), Robby (Fred), and Jeremy (Samantha), and his treasured sister, Christine. His seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren will forever hold his spirit close, reminded of the warmth and wisdom he imparted to them.

Ed was a pillar of strength and love, a guiding light whose memory will endure in the hearts of all who knew him. Though Ed has departed from this world, he is now reunited with his parents, James and Nettie, his dear wife Bonnie, his granddaughter Angel, and his brother, James, in eternal rest.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that contributions be directed to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, which held particular significance to Ed as his preferred charitable organization. His profound affection for children and his steadfast commitment to advancing pediatric cancer treatment motivated this designation.

Edward Lewis’s life was a testament to love, service, and family. As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the rich tapestry of memories he leaves behind, and we are grateful for the time we were privileged to share with him.

The burial will be announced in the spring at Fairdale Rural Cemetery with military honors. Foster Funeral Home has care of arrangements.
