Chauncey Frederick Burgdorf

Chauncey “Joe” F. Burgdorf, age 89 of Hannibal, NY passed away peacefully on Friday, August 29, 2025, at Upstate University Hospital.

He was born on August 5th, 1936, in Martville, NY to the late Andrew and Jenny (Thompson) Burgdorf. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 58 years, Shirley E. Burgdorf in 2018; and siblings, Jane Earle and Charles Burgdorf.

After high school he joined the US Air Force, he was stationed in Northampton England where he met his wife, Shirley Burgdorf. When his service concluded they moved to Hannibal, NY and were married in 1960. He retired after approximately 25 years of dedicated service at Alcan Aluminum Plant, now Novelis in Oswego, NY. Joe was an active member of the Hannibal United Methodist Church. He served on church committees and regularly volunteered to assist with church functions and dinners. He enjoyed birdwatching, walking, reading and he enjoyed supporting the Syracuse University football and basketball teams. He was also a lifelong fan of the Syracuse Mets.

Joe is survived by his loving children, Ann Gregory and Andrew (Teresa) Burgdorf; and grandchildren, Christine and David Gregory and Cameron and Cole Burgdorf.

Joe was a caring and dedicated husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend who will be sorely missed. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joe’s name may be made to the Hannibal Free Library.

A private graveside will be held in Martville Cemetery where he’ll be laid to rest with his beloved wife, Shirley. To leave a special message for the family, please sign the guestbook.
