Carol Casler Mitchell, 83, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2026. Born on April 19, 1943, in New York, Carol was the daughter of the late Hugh Casler and Jean (née Fritz) Casler. She grew up in Port Byron, New York, graduating from Port Byron High School. After living in Throop, New York, she eventually settled in the Annapolis, Maryland area, where she built a full and vibrant life.
Carol led a distinguished professional career, beginning as a secretary for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, continuing as a Legislative Assistant for Senator Robert Byrd in the U.S. Senate, and later serving as Vice President of the public relations firm Ryan-McGinn.
Faith and community were central to Carol’s life. She was a devoted member of Cape St. Claire United Methodist Church for over 40 years, where she served in numerous leadership roles, including as a lay leader for the congregation, and shared her love of music singing in the choir.
Carol embraced life with warmth and curiosity. She was an avid traveler, painter, and Mahjong player, and spent many hours passionately researching her family's genealogy. Married for 52 years to her beloved husband, David Mitchell, who passed away in 2013, the two spent their years enjoying adventures together. They loved sailing on the Chesapeake Bay, spending quiet time at their Florida vacation home, and taking trips and cruises across Europe and the United States with their dear friends, Betty and Ervin.
Carol is survived by her loving son, Robert Mitchell of Columbia, MD; her sisters, Lois Fay (Al) of Beverly Hills, FL, Kathy Loveland of Oswego, NY, Darlene Campbell of Oswego, NY, Laurie Van Horn (Charles) of Red Creek, NY, and Melinda Forsythe (Bill) of Martville, NY; and her brother, Hugh Casler (Darlene) of Red Creek, NY. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Becky Diez (Pedro) and Pam Medlin (Billy Scott), as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and lifelong friends.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at Brightview Assisted Living for the compassionate care and comfort provided to Carol over the past 15 months.
